AssalamualaikumThe Quran is a callenging book. It poses the question to its reader frequently through out
Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. [30:8]
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.[38:29]
Will they not then ponder on the Qur'an? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein much incongruity. [4:82]
The reader is continually presented with an intellectual challenge to ponder the message of the Quran. For a muslim it is relatively easier to accept wholeheartedly the Quran because we are already within the framework of submission and acknowledgement that it(The Quran) is the Divine Revelation from Allah (SWT) . However there are verses we come across in the Quran like
The stars and the trees prostrate.[55:6]
To GOD prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the mornings and the evenings.[13:15]
Because of our human experiences we cannot comprehend the prostration of stars and trees so these verses can present a dichotomy for a muslim.
- Do we take to our beleif or do we take to science,intellect ?
- Is there a conflict ?
- When does a muslim need to ponder and when do we need to submit ?
- What is the role of intellect ?
Sheikh Yasir Qadhi has combined an Islamic seminary training (from Islamic University of Madinah) with a Western education (from University of Houston and Yale University).
He is by far one of my favourite scholars to listen to. Iman and Intellect boost guaranteed InshAllah
